What is a bed

In South Africa, the word "bed" is commonly used to describe a bed set.
A typical bed set consists of a mattress and a matched base or foundation.

The base is usually covered in the same upholstery fabric and has been specially constructed for the mattress. A matching base ensures that comfort and optimum support are maintained for longer, across the entire sleep surface.

Double Bed size - Width

Measured from outside to outside, across the head or the foot of the bed, the width of a double bed should be approximately 137cm. Due to the materials used in the construction of the bed there can be a slight variance in the size.

Double Bed size - Length

Double beds are available in 2 standard lengths (most manufacturers offer both).
  • 188cm - By far the most popular size and referred to as Standard Length.
  • 200cm - At 12cm longer it's referred to as Extra Length.
When deciding on what length to buy, consider your height and the size of your room. It's better to be supported over the full length of your body. Taller people benefit from the extra length. Generally spring beds, in either std or extra length cost the same, while extra length beds made from foam tend to cost more.

Buy a Double or Queen bed

When two people share a double bed they each have 68cm of space only; this is practically the same width as a cot mattress!

A feeling of space and unrestricted movement plays a key role in helping your body to relax, therefore if space permitting, we suggest that you rather opt for a queen size bed, as a double bed is best if sleeping alone or for use in a guest room where it's less frequently used.
